The Brass Wedding Collection (Book I-III). Brass Quintet. AK Brass Press, 2006.
These three volumes of wedding music for brass quintet are organized as follows. Book I (Trumpet Tunes and Voluntaries) contains music by William Boyce, Jeremiah Clarke, John Stanley, Johann Fischer and Henry Purcell. Indeed, these are the most famous voluntaries and tunes familiar to trumpeters and brides alike. Next, Book II (Processionals and Recessionals) includes Andre Campra’s Rigaudon, Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Te Deum, George Fredric Handel’s The Rejoicing, Jean-Joseph Mouret’s Rondeau, and the first movement from Henry Purcell’s Sonata for Trumpet. All of these Baroque works except Rigaudon and Te Deum are set in the brilliant key of D major with A piccolo trumpet for the first part and C trumpet for the second part. Rigaudon set in E major and Te Deum set in C major include two C trumpet parts. Book III (Essential Wedding Music) includes the following classics: Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring and Sheep May Safely Graze, Handel’s Air and Hornpipe, Mendelssohn’s Wedding March, Schubert’s Ave Maria, and Wagner’s Bridal Chorus. Only the Hornpipe is intended for piccolo trumpet.
Overall, all of the volumes are presented in a clear format with all page turns accommodated and road maps simplified or clearly displayed. Undergraduate brass quintets with a first trumpet player comfortable on piccolo trumpet parts will find these arrangements at an appropriate level. Working ensembles with fulltime or part-time professional players should read these familiar pieces on first sight without difficulty, making the collections an excellent solution for quintets with rotating players or with regular substitutes. For these purposes, the three volumes are highly recommended. (Luis C. Engelke, Music Reviews Editor ITG Journal June 2007)
